Try these 5 ways to serve up healthier bakes:

1. The switch-out

Swap butter for light spread or oils where possible, and try alternative sweeteners such as brown rice syrup, honey or sweet fruits, in place of regular sugar.

2. Spice is nice

Worried about missing the flavour from butter and sugar? Give recipes a boost with punchy ground spices such as cardamom, cloves or ginger.

3. Flour power

Make bakes a bit healthier by using wholemeal flour in place of white. It will give cakes a nuttier flavour and make them slightly denser – which means you won’t need to eat as much to feel satisfied.

4. Ice is right

Forget heavy butter icings. A simple dusting of icing sugar is pretty and usually gives just the right amount of sweetness to finish off your bake. For an autumnal twist, try a combination of icing sugar and cinnamon sifted over fruity treats.

5. Pastry perfection

Shortcrust and puff pastries can hide a lot of fat in your tarts and bakes. Instead, try filo pastry for a lower fat alternative – it’ll give tarts a crunchy, crisp crust.
