Then & Now

Jade before and after

What prompted you to lose weight?

Health and fitness weren’t my priority. I was only interested in going out and having fun. Plus, I had got my driver’s licence a few years earlier, so I had started driving everywhere instead of walking. It wasn’t until my new job asked for my uniform size that it hit me. I said I was size 16, but when the pants arrived, they didn’t fit. At that moment, I knew something had to change. I had joined WW four years earlier, when I was 19, but I wasn’t committed. The week after I received my work pants, I decided to do WW again.

Personal Coaching made the difference

My WW Coach, Sheryl Enright, was amazing. She was so supportive and she made me accountable – if I didn’t do well, I was only letting myself down. My mum has been one of my biggest supporters, too.

What motivated you along the way?

My big motivation was knowing how I felt when I had been losing weight, as opposed to how I felt when I started. I never wanted to feel like I did when I couldn't fit into clothes. I’d go clothes shopping and I’d be angry, then sad, and in denial – it was an emotional roller-coaster.

What are you loving about the program?

I still eat what I love. Meals like burgers and chips made healthier by using chicken breast or tenderloins instead of meat. Now that chicken has 0 SmartPoints® it’s even better! I’d never eaten chickpeas before and these days I’m eating lots of lentils, peas, and corn – ZeroPoint™ foods. One of my new favourite recipes is the sweet potato and chickpea patties.

When members and friends see my Instagram feed, they can’t believe how much I can eat and look the way I do. My main meals are packed with ZeroPoint foods as they keep me satisfied plus I don’t need to snack as much. I save my rollover SmartPoints for desserts, which I love.

How does WW help you through weekends?

You can enjoy unexpected social occasions without derailing your weight loss efforts. The new system of rolling over unused SmartPoints and saving them up means there’s more flexibility when going out.

How do you use ZeroPoint foods?

I’m loving making pasta-based meals that are quick and easy. It’s now easy to keep the SmartPoints fairly low by using ZeroPoint proteins such as turkey mince and bulking them up with lots of veggies.

What do you like about the WW app?

My favorite feature of the WW app is the recipe builder. I can customise recipes if I don’t have, or like, an ingredient. I love that I can type ‘chicken breast’ into the search field and every recipe with chicken breast comes up.

How do you maintain your weight loss?

There has been no magic bullet to my weight-loss success. Some weeks I’d lose a few hundred grams and some weeks I’d stay the same. But I kept plugging away. I reached Goal on June 30 2014, when I hit 62kg. It felt terrific, of course, but by then I knew I could do better.

I maintained for 11 months and then I joined up again to reach a new goal of 55kg. A lot of people wondered why I was there, so I took the pants that used to be too small for me and showed them how far I’d come. On July 27, 2015, I reached Goal for the second time, weighing 55kg.

My day on a plate

Mug muffin: combine 30g quick oats, 1 egg, 1 mashed banana, and 2 chopped fresh dates in a mug. Microwave for 90 seconds. Serve with 160g tub of Danone YoPro Plain yoghurt

Grilled fish and veggies with quick-cook rice

Chicken tenderloins with veggies and mashed potatoes - I use butter and milk in my mash because I don’t like to miss out!
