Ginger, garlic, red pepper flakes, and a touch of oyster sauce give this asparagus dish lots of flavor and texture. It takes less than 20 minutes to make and is a hearty side that fully makes use of just a few ingredients. Feel free to adjust the red pepper flakes depending on your heat tolerance, or even add some Sriracha or hot sauce if you prefer instead. This recipe works with broccoli, leeks, or green beans if asparagus isn't in season or you don't have any handy. We used chicken broth to add a bit more richness, but some vegetable broth or water is fine, too.

Ingredients

Vegetable oil

2¼ tsp

Fresh ginger

1 Tbsp, minced (or to taste)

Garlic

2 clove(s), minced

Asparagus

1½ pound(s), cut into 2-inch pieces

Chicken broth

3 Tbsp, or water

Oyster sauce

1½ Tbsp

Red pepper flakes

tsp, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil over high heat in a large nonstick skillet. Add ginger and garlic; cook, stirring, until browned. Add asparagus and cook for 30 seconds.
  2. Add broth and cook, stirring occasionally, until asparagus are crisp-tender, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add oyster sauce and red pepper flakes; stir and cook until heated through, about 1 minute more. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Yields about 3/4 cup per serving.
