These pita pizzas are a delicious twist on your typical tomato sauce-based pizzas. The turkey and tomato sauce is enhanced by lots of onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, allspice, and cinnamon.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Canola oil

2 tsp

Uncooked extra lean ground turkey breast

¾ pound(s)

Red onion

1 small, halved and sliced

Garlic

3 clove(s), minced

Ground cumin

1¼ tsp

Paprika

1 tsp

Table salt

½ tsp

Ground allspice

¼ tsp

Ground cinnamon

¼ tsp

Canned tomato sauce

8 oz

Whole wheat pita

4 large, pocketless variety (about 7-inches each)

Tomato

1 large, diced

Cilantro

1 cup(s), whole leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 475°F; spray 2 baking sheets with cooking spray.
  2. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add turkey and onion and cook, breaking up turkey with wooden spoon, until turkey is no longer pink and onion is softened, about 6 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, allspice, and cinnamon; cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, 1 minute. Stir in tomato sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, 2 minutes.
  3. Place pitas on baking sheets and top each evenly with turkey mixture (scant 3⁄4 cup for each pita). Bake until undersides of pitas are crisp, about 8 minutes. Top evenly with tomato and cilantro.
