This homemade meat sauce is made more nutritious using lean ground turkey instead of fatty ground beef. It gets a flavor boost from a dash of red pepper flakes.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

Uncooked onion(s)

1 cup(s), chopped

Garlic clove(s)

4 medium clove(s), minced

Canned tomatoes

56 oz, plum-variety, undrained, coarsely chopped

Canned tomato paste

6 oz

Dried basil

1½ tsp

Dried oregano

1 tsp

Sugar

1 tsp

Table salt

½ tsp, optional

Crushed red pepper flakes

¼ tsp, optional

Uncooked extra lean ground turkey breast

20 oz

Uncooked spaghetti

12 oz, cooked without added salt and fat, drained

Grated Parmesan cheese

2 Tbsp, or Romano cheese

Instructions

  1. Coat a large saucepan with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat.
  2. Add onion to skillet; cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; cook 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar and, if desired, salt and pepper flakes; bring to a simmer. Simmer uncovered 25 to 35 minutes or until sauce is desired consistency.
  3. Meanwhile, cook turkey in a large skillet until no longer pink, breaking into chunks with a wooden spoon. Stir turkey into sauce; heat through. Serve over spaghetti and sprinkle with cheese.
