We created a cheese steak sandwich that boasts nearly half the calories of this usually fat-laden Philadelphia specialty, yet sacrificed none of the classic flavor. How, do you ask? We utilize onions that are softened with cooking spray instead of butter and sweetened with a touch of sugar; lean flank steak that's seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; reduced-fat blended shredded cheese instead of lots of provolone or mozzarella; and mixed-grain hamburger rolls instead of carb-heavy hoagie rolls. The onion-steak-cheese combination is still equally satisfying, which you'll soon discover after you unwrap a warm sandwich and take that first bite.

Ingredients

Onion

1 medium, thinly sliced

Sugar

1 Tbsp

Uncooked lean flank steak

1 pound(s), cut into 8 thin slices

Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp

Table salt

¼ tsp

Black pepper

¼ tsp

Mixed grain hamburger bun

4 item(s)

Weight Watchers Reduced-fat Mexican style shredded cheese

½ cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Coat a large, nonstick skillet with olive oil cooking spray and set pan over medium-high heat. When pan is hot, add onion and sugar and sauté until tender and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Remove onion from pan; set aside.
  3. Add steak to skillet and sauté until browned and cooked through, about 1 to 2 minutes per side. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper and cook until liquid is absorbed.
  4. Slice rolls in half. Divide steak evenly between rolls and top with onion and cheese. Wrap in foil, transfer to oven and bake until cheese melts, about 10 minutes.
