Sloppy Joes are a well-loved American family dinner, and this slow cooker version requires minimal prep time but delivers the same delicious results. Brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and cumin provide the sweet and salty mix in the sauce that these sandwiches are known for, but we’ve paired it with lean ground beef for a healthier take. To dress-up your Joes, top each sandwich with a handful of shredded carrot or lettuce or a sprinkling of pickled jalapeños—or set them all out and let each family member decide. You can also serve the sloppy Joe mixture on top of a baked potato.

Ingredients

Uncooked 93% lean ground beef

1 pound(s)

Canned diced tomatoes

14½ oz

Onion

1 small, chopped

Celery

1 rib(s), medium, chopped

Packed brown sugar

3 Tbsp

Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp

Ground cumin

1½ tsp

Chili powder

1 tsp

Table salt

½ tsp

Whole wheat bread

6 slice(s), sandwich or hamburger variety

Instructions

  1. Spray a large nonstick skillet with nonstick spray and set over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes.
  2. Transfer the beef to a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker. Stir in all the remaining ingredients except the rolls. Cover and cook until the flavors are blended and the sauce is slightly thickened, 3 – 4 hours on high or 6 – 8 hours on low.
  3. Spoon 1⁄2 cup of the beef mixture into each roll. Yields 1 sandwich per serving.
