Think of these roll-ups as a twist on a grilled cheese. You get toasted bread, gooey cheese, and the added deliciousness of savory ham. The bread part gets a hearty boost from the egg custard—the French toast method—giving the center of the roll-ups a slightly creamy consistency. We call for cooking these in an air fryer for a super crispy exterior; you can also cook them in a skillet coated with cooking spray for a few minutes on each side.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Egg

2 large egg(s)

1% low fat milk

3 Tbsp

Reduced-calorie whole wheat bread

8 slice(s)

Dijon mustard

8 tsp

Lean deli-sliced honey ham

4 oz

Swiss cheese

88 gm, 8 [11-gram] ultra-thin slices

Instructions

  1. In a pie plate or other shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk. Cut the crusts off the bread; with a rolling pin, roll each slice into a very thin, flat piece. Coat the top of each bread slice with 1 teaspoon mustard. Divide the ham evenly among the bread slices; top each with 1 cheese slice. Roll up the topped bread, arranging the rolls seam side down so they stay closed.
  2. Preheat an air fryer, if necessary, to 350°F. Coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Dip 4 roll-ups into the egg mixture, turning to evenly coat the bread. Arrange in the air fryer basket, seam side down; coat the tops with cooking spray. Air-fry until browned and crisp, 7 to 9 minutes. Repeat the process with the remaining roll-ups and egg mixture.
