Say hello to this spicy riff on a classic BLT! To kick up the heat, we’ve skipped the mayo in lieu of harissa, which is an aromatic chile paste that’s commonly used in African and Middle Eastern cooking. The bright red condiment is typically made with smoked chile peppers, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and a blend of spices including cumin, coriander, and caraway so it partners very well with Canadian bacon. Look for harissa paste in the International aisle at your local supermarket. In this hearty sandwich for one, grab a grilled chicken breast from your grocer’s deli or plan to use any leftover chicken you have at home.

Ingredients

uncooked Canadian bacon

2 slice(s)

reduced-calorie bread

2 slice(s), toasted

harissa paste

1 tsp

chicken breast, grilled, skinless, boneless

2 oz, or cooked, sliced

fresh lemon juice

1 tsp

black pepper

1 pinch

lettuce

2 leaf/leaves, large

fresh tomato(es)

1 small, sliced

Instructions

  1. Spray small skillet with nonstick spray and set over medium heat. Add bacon and cook, turning once, until well browned, about 2 minutes.
  2. Spread harissa on one slice of bread. Top with chicken and drizzle chicken with lemon juice. Sprinkle with pepper. Top with lettuce, bacon, and tomato. Cover with remaining bread slice and cut sandwich in half.
