Wearing my new sandals

in spring 2017, I finally  felt comfortable. With a flat sole and thick strap to hold in my sweaty, swollen feet, they seemed perfect. But when my husband, Alex, saw them, he burst out laughing, calling them ‘granny sandals’. At 19st I’d adopted the motto ‘fat and fabulous’ and hadn’t tried to shed the weight I’d gained at university, or while pregnant with my daughter, Ellie, now five. When my GP said my weight could cause health issues, I brushed it off.

Then, in June 2017,

my mum, Tina, asked me to join her at a WW Workshop for moral support. Chatting to the WW Coach, Fiona, was a revelation, and hearing WW members’ stories helped me realise I was in denial. Being overweight wasn’t just about looks; it also meant I couldn’t keep up with Ellie in the park. Alex was surprised when I told him I’d decided to join, but also supportive.

We started cooking

healthier meals and cut out snacks and puddings. Buying veg for the first time in years, I discovered that carrots and corn are actually tasty! Mum and I kept track of our daily steps, while Ellie and I had fun using the barcode scanner when shopping. I felt so inspired that in January I decided to train to become a WW Coach!

I’ve learned a lot,

but the most surprising thing was that feet can carry extra weight. I thought I’d be stuck in a sweaty size 7, but they’ve now shrunk to a 5½. I’m so proud of my feet, I now love having a pedicure and choosing a bright red polish for my toenails. This summer, I’m showing them off in colourful sandals, and those ‘granny sandals’ are a distant memory.
