Perhaps you’ve never thought about grilling French toast, but just think about how the heat from the flame can lightly char and crisp the edges of the bread, and how a light tinge of smoky essence would enhance the richness of the custard-soaked bread. You may never cook French toast any other way from now on! We call for an outdoor grill for the most robust flavor, but you can also cook the bread, in batches, on a stovetop grill pan for about the same amount of time.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Egg

2 large egg(s)

Fat free evaporated milk

¾ cup(s)

Maple syrup

1 Tbsp

Vanilla extract

1 tsp

Multigrain bread

8 oz, cut into 8 slices

Powdered sugar (confectioner's)

2 tsp

Strawberries

2 cup(s), sliced

Instructions

  1. Coat an outdoor grill rack with nonstick spray. Prepare grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a 13 x 9-inch baking dish, whisk eggs until lightly beaten. Whisk in milk, syrup, and vanilla. Add bread slices in a single layer; let stand 2 minutes. Turn bread over and let stand until all egg mixture has been absorbed, 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Arrange bread on hot grill rack. Grill until grill marks appear and bread feels set when lightly touched, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Sprinkle French toast with powdered sugar and top with strawberries.
  4. Serving size: 2 slices French toast, ½ tsp sugar, and ½ cup strawberries
