Ginger, water, sugar and cloves make a flavorful syrup for the navel oranges to marinate in for an hour. When choosing naval oranges to use for this recipe, look for smooth-skinned oranges that are heavy for their size. We also suggest that you wash the oranges thoroughly before peeling and cutting. Peel the orange with a paring knife to more easily remove the pith and membranes. While this dish is a refreshing addition to breakfast or brunch, you might want to consider serving it as an elegant dessert as well.

Ingredients

Sugar

½ cup(s)

Water

cup(s)

Fresh ginger

2 piece(s), 2-inch, unpeeled, sliced

Whole cloves

½ Tbsp, about 8 cloves

Orange

4 medium, Naval, peeled and sliced into rounds

Instructions

  1. Put sugar, water, ginger and cloves into a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes.
  2. Put orange slices into a serving bowl and strain syrup over them. Press oranges a bit to submerge them. Cover and chill completely, at least 1 hour.
  3. To serve, spoon orange slices into shallow bowls and spoon syrup over them.
