Spice up summer's bounty of melons with our delightful ginger-flavored sauce. The delicious sauce made from boiling ginger, cloves, allspice and sugar boiled together in mineral water can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator overnight. Mixed with cantaloupe, blueberries and watermelon, this dish makes a great ending to any meal.

Ingredients

Mineral water

1½ fl oz

Sugar

cup(s)

Ground ginger

2 tsp

Ground cloves

1 tsp

Ground allspice

1 tsp

Watermelon

2 cup(s), chunks, seeded

Cantaloupe

¼ medium, cubed

Blueberries

1 cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Combine water, sugar, ginger, cloves and allspice in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat; cover and chill at least 30 minutes. (Note: This sauce can be prepared a day ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator.)
  2. Divide watermelon, cantaloupe and blueberries evenly among 6 dessert dishes. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of sauce over each and serve.

Notes

Tip: When selecting blueberries at the grocery store, look for berries that are firm and plump. Stay away from blueberries which look reddish and shriveled. Refrigerate them when you get them home and expect them to last about 10 days.
