As American as hot dogs and apple pie, ranch dip's popularity appears to know no boundaries. Sure, a packet of ranch seasoning mix is convenient, but the resulting dip simply cannot compare to this mix of chopped fresh herbs and garlic blended into creamy deliciousness. Serve this with raw vegetables, use it as a sauce for steamed ones, or slather a spoonful on a serving of cold poached chicken or salmon served over a bed of salad greens for a lovely, light lunch. Homemade ranch dip is easy, fresh and versatile, so it's a recipe worth memorizing.

Ingredients

Garlic

1 clove(s), peeled

Kosher salt

¼ tsp

Light sour cream

½ cup(s)

Reduced calorie mayonnaise

cup(s)

Water

2 Tbsp

Chives

cup(s), fresh, chopped

Fresh parsley

2 Tbsp, Italian (flat leaf), chopped

Black pepper

tsp, freshly ground, or to taste

White wine vinegar

1 tsp, fresh lemon juice and/or water to taste

Instructions

  1. Put the garlic clove on a cutting board; sprinkle with salt. Finely chop garlic and then scrape it with the side of knife until a paste forms; place in a small bowl.
  2. Add sour cream, mayonnaise and water; stir until smooth. Stir in chives, parsley and pepper until blended; cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour for flavors to blend. Thin out with vinegar, lemon juice and/or water if desired. Yields about 2 tablespoons per serving.
