The combination of apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg makes this hot breakfast a wonderful fall-inspired meal that's perfect to eat as the temperatures start to drop. It takes about just 15 minutes to make and serves just enough for a hearty breakfast for two. Farina is a type of milled wheat that's usually used to make porridge and is a great alternative to oatmeal. We definitely recommend doubling the recipe to reheat later in the week. But farina can also be cooked like polenta if you have some extra left over. To mix things up a bit, feel free to swap a pear for the apple, if desired.

Ingredients

Fat free skim milk

2 cup(s)

Ground cinnamon

tsp

Ground nutmeg

tsp, plus extra for garnish

Uncooked farina

cup(s)

Apple

1 small, Golden Delicious, peeled, cored and cut into small chunks

Splenda No Calorie sweetener packets

1 Tbsp, or to taste

Plain fat free yogurt

¼ cup(s)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine milk, cinnamon and nutmeg and bring to a boil over high heat; sprinkle in farina, stirring constantly. Stir in apple; return to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened, stirring often, about 2 minutes; remove from heat and stir in Splenda.
  3. Spoon cooked cereal into 2 small bowls and top each with yogurt; garnish with a dusting of nutmeg. Yields about 1 1/3 cups of cereal and 2 tablespoons of yogurt per serving.
