If you think you don’t like tofu, this crispy tofu recipe might just change your mind! For the crispiest result, don’t skip pressing the tofu to remove the excess liquid; you can use tins or a heavy pan as a weight.

Ingredients

Plain Tofu

450 g, extra-firm

Tamari soya sauce

2 tablespoon(s)

Sesame Oil

1 tablespoon(s)

Rice Wine Vinegar

2 teaspoon(s)

Garlic

2 clove(s), finely chopped

Root Ginger

½ teaspoon(s), finely chopped

Cornflour

1 teaspoon(s), level

Instructions

  1. Wrap the tofu in kitchen paper and put on a plate. Put another plate on top and weigh it down using a full tin of food. Leave for 30 minutes to drain, then pour off the liquid and cut into cubes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the tamari, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Add the tofu and marinate for 20 minutes, turning occasionally.
  3. Preheat air fryer, if necessary, to 200°C. Transfer the tofu from the marinade to a plate using a slotted spoon. Using a fine sieve, sprinkle with cornstarch, turning the tofu as you go. Pour any remaining marinade into a small serving dish.
  4. Air-fry the tofu in a single layer (in batches, if necessary) for 12-15 mins, flipping halfway through, until crispy and golden brown. Serve with the reserved marinade for drizzling.

Notes

Or try this with smoked or baked tofu—no pressing necessary. Garnish this recipe with fresh herbs and sesame seeds, and serve it with your favorite dipping sauce or drizzled with the reserved marinade and a touch of toasted sesame oil. You can also bake this recipe in a regular oven at 200°C for 30 minutes.
