Jell-O goes all grown up in this recipe for a homemade gelatin that is surprisingly easy to make. Remember that even if it comes together in a snap, gelatin needs ample time to set, so this recipe requires a little thinking ahead. If you have never made — or eaten — homemade “Jell-O,” you are in for a real taste treat, as the fresh fruit flavor is intense and delicious. Once you prepare this, you are sure to make it again and again. It's a show-stopping, old school dessert that everyone will be wowed by, despite its ease of preparation. Substitute other juices of your liking for the tangerine or mandarin juice to change up the recipe's flavor.

Ingredients

Unflavored gelatin

1½ package(s), (3 tablespoons)

Water

1 cup(s)

Tangerine juice

5 cup(s), fresh, or mandarin juice

Packed brown sugar

¼ cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Lightly spray a 6-cup decorative mold with nonstick spray.
  2. Sprinkle the gelatin over the water in a small bowl. Let stand until softened, about 5 minutes. Place the bowl in a larger bowl of hot water and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
  3. Whisk together the mandarin juice and brown sugar in a large bowl until the sugar is dissolved; whisk in the gelatin mixture. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve set over a large bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Pour the strained mixture into the mold. Refrigerate, covered, until thoroughly chilled and set, at least 3 hours or up to 2 days.
  4. Run a thin knife around the edge of the mold to help loosen the gelatin, then dip the mold into a bowl of hot water for about 5 seconds. Invert the mold onto a large chilled serving plate and serve at once. Yields 1 cup per serving.
