Enjoy the same flavor of the classic recipe but with fewer calories. Keep wheat bread, egg substitute, and milk on hand to whip up this recipe anytime you’d like. Consider this recipe your blank canvas and get creative with using different spices and incorporating toppings. Ground cinnamon is delicious here but if you’d like spicier aroma use either apple, pumpkin or chai spice. You may want to try topping the warm toasts with blueberries, strawberries or raspberries to add some vibrant color and squeeze in a serving of fruit. Swapping almond or hazelnut extract for the vanilla could be fun twists too.

Ingredients

Liquid egg substitute

2 cup(s)

Fat free skim milk

¼ cup(s)

Ground cinnamon

1 tsp

Vanilla extract

½ tsp

Wheat bread

8 slice(s)

Reduced-calorie pancake syrup

½ cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the egg substitute, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla in a large shallow bowl or pie plate. Dip the bread into the egg mixture, one slice at a time, until evenly soaked.
  2. Spray a large nonstick skillet with nonstick spray and set over medium heat. Add the soaked bread to the skillet, in batches, and cook until browned, about 2 minutes on each side.
  3. Transfer the French toast to 4 plates and serve with the warm syrup. Yields 2 slices toast and 2 tablespoons syrup per serving.
