Woman trying on dress
We've come a long way from the slimming underwear that just shoved your "problem areas" to a different problem area (belly fat under the armpits, anyone?), all the while cutting off your circulation and making you feel faint. New technologies in fabric and garment design have yielded a wide variety of figure fixers that help women of all sizes and shapes feel more confident. The Weight Watchers staff tried a selection of them; here are some of our favorites.

Donna Karan Hosiery, The Body Perfect Collection, Level 1 Mid-Thigh
This sleek shapewear is lightweight, yet it reminded me of luxurious long underwear as I realized it was keeping my butt and thighs warmer under pants on a mile-long walk to work. I preferred the Level 1 shapewear as it wasn’t as difficult to slip on and off during a workday with frequent bathroom breaks. The edges didn’t cut in and create bulges on my thighs and waist area, and I liked that the leg length wasn’t too long. I have found other shapewear plays peek-a-boo when sitting down in a just-above-the-knee skirt or dress. The medium size fit well and two coworkers told me I looked slim the day I wore the mid-thigh shaper. Donna Karan also has Level 2 and Level 3 (coming out this spring) for extra slimming efforts. I’d recommend these for under a fancy dress – they’ll be comfortable for three to four hours but not a long workday. Available in black/beige, S, M, T/L– Diana Kelly, Associate Editor

Sassybax Torso Trim Peek
Peekaboo Torso Trim by Sassybax
The lightweight material helps shape you, slim you and eliminate bra-bulge back fat by being a camisole, bra and shaper all in one. For those of us with larger, softer breasts (hey, I’ve nursed three children), there’s still room for a more supportive bra underneath. Tuck the camisole into your waistband or use it for layering; it does not ride up or cut off your circulation like some of the competition. Also available as a Slimming Slip. – Leslie Fink, MS, RD, Nutritionist/Recipe Editor

Hips Curves Body Briefer
Cotton Spandex Body Briefer and Light Slip Dress by Hips & Curves
The Spandex material on these products keeps the body nice and tight (read: no jiggling). I looked firm in both and appeared to have lost two inches from my waist when I wore the slip under my suit to church. People thought I had lost a lot of weight, but no, it was just the slip doing its own work. It held me in and I felt nice and curvy. The briefer has soft cups that are meant to serve as a bra but I like a little more support so I wore a bra underneath. A great line for larger women: the briefer is available in sizes 38 B to 50 DD and the slip comes in sizes 36 to 48. – Sister Myrtle Antoine

$21.95 for the Briefer; $29.95 for Slip; Available at
Cass Co Luxury
Cass and Co Luxury Shapewear
After spending hours in a department store “stressing room” looking for a comfortable foundation layer for a New Year’s gown, I resolved to regroup and find some better options. When I found Cass Luxury Shapewear online, I could tell there was something different about their Invisibella line. Later, as I tried on their 2-in-1 Shaper Slip, I knew I had found the perfect underwear for my strapless floor-length dress. The slip had silky, luxurious fabric, no rolling issues, and best of all – no underwires were needed! I was supported in every direction, without any poking or pulling. I also tried on the Shaper Short-Short, which looked less like granny-panties and more like fashionable boy-shorts. These are truly comfortable foundation garments with a touch of luxury. – Laura March, Production Assistant

Shapeez Ultimate
Shapeez Ultimate
The Shapeez Ultimate camisole did wonders for my shape under a clingy turtleneck. With adjustable straps and built-in underwires, the camisole gave me the perfect amount of support, not to mention it was long enough to tuck into pants and not roll while I sat. I was a bit surprised to find that my 36Ds fit perfectly into a “Medium A” size, so be sure to match your measurements to the fit guide before making a purchase online. As for that clingy turtleneck? I received so many compliments, I don’t think I’ll be wearing anything but this shaper below it for a long time to come. – Laura March, Production Assistant

Spanx Hide
Spanx Hide & Sleek Hi-Rise Panty
I will go a long way to avoid the dreaded VPL, so I was extremely skeptical about the panty cut on this bodyshaper — I normally go either for a thong or mid-thigh cut. But the former is not that easy to find in a comfy fabric, and the latter can seem like a whole lotta undergarment. This Hi-Rise Panty got a thorough workout under a tight satin dress for a Las Vegas night of cocktails, dinner and dancing, and even at the end of the evening I didn’t object to my husband taking a photo of my rear view. I did have to make the odd minor adjustment (disappearing behind a pillar to furtively re-cover a butt cheek), but overall, this was far more comfortable than I’d ever given panties credit for, and I felt drop-dead gorgeous without dropping dead from asphyxiation. – Elly Trickett McNerney, Managing Editor

Yummie Tummie
Yummie Tummie
This shapewear collection offers light mid-section support and comes in a multitude of styles and colors. The bust and hip panels are made of cotton and the shaping panel is only around the midsection so it’s perfect for layering. I appreciated the Strappy style’s adjustable silk straps because I could customize the neckline. Also I preferred the regular 23” length which was long enough to tuck into my pants without having to worry about it riding up. However there’s also a 26” longer length available. The Body scoop neck style was light and comfortable enough to wear under sweaters. The collection has eight styles including the Nursing T with a snap down bust panel. The Holiday Collection includes three jeweled tank styles and one camisole slip dress. – Lisa Thomas, Senior Copywriter
