Weight Watchers 50 Years of Success Contest Grand Prize Winners: Norfolk Southern Corp.

After seeing their colleagues’ success with the Weight Watchers program, the employees at train company Norfolk Southern Corp. wanted in on the weight-loss action. When they started an At Work meeting, Mary, Dan, John, Robert and Brian got fit and shared their struggles and successes. Combined, these five inspiring members have lost more than 200 pounds* and become grand prize winners in the At Work category of our 50 Years of Success Contest!

What’s it like being on Plan with your co-workers?

Mary: I started a little later than the guys — I was the only woman in the group! But seeing their success and the growing number on my own scale, I decided to join them. Our group was collaborative, not competitive. You spend most of your day at work, so having that built-in support network is awesome! We also started doing fitness events and races as a group. We’ve all become great friends over the last year.

John: We all support each other and it’s definitely improved our working relationships.

How is your life different now that you’ve lost the weight?

Robert: I have a 2-year-old grandson. Now I can pick him up and play with him. I couldn’t have done that before. I also recently completed an 8K! At 67, I’m one of the oldest people in the group. I think people are surprised and inspired by my success. Brian: I love to golf, so being able to get back out on the course without huffing and puffing is a great feeling. I’m more active and I’m even doing some weight-lifting. I have two 18-year-old daughters that I couldn’t keep up with before. Now they’re trying to keep up with me! I no longer have high blood pressure or knee pain and I’m in the best shape I’ve been in in about 15 years.

Dan: I live on six acres of land and take care of an additional six next to it. My wife and I built the country house as our dream retirement home. Before Weight Watchers my wife said we should consider selling the house because I wasn’t in good enough shape to take care of it. Now, not only can I care for my property, but I’ve started riding my 1988 bicycle again! It was my passion when I was younger.

What other healthy changes have you made?

Mary: I run every other day, I’ve hired a personal trainer and I recently completed my first mud run! As far as food goes, I still eat a lot, I just eat healthier. I used to choose low-calorie processed foods as snacks, but now I constantly eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

John: Our company has started offering fitness classes for us, so I take advantage of those now. And I’ve even started running!

Mary: I feel like I’ve become the strong, healthy role model that I’ve wanted to be for my children, friends and co-workers. And for someone closing in on the big 5-0, I have killer arms. A woman recently stopped me in the airport to say, “Great arms!” It makes me giggle because I never thought I would be “that person.”

Dan: I no longer have shortness of breath while climbing vessel gangways on the ships I go on, as part of my job.

John: My pants fit better and I don’t snore anymore!
