Our cake is so rich and chocolatey, no one will ever guess the secret to its fudgy, moist texture is applesauce. Here, we used the unsweetened variety to prevent it from being overly sweet. Bring it to your next picnic or potluck in its baking dish and tote the whipped topping along to dollop on each slice right before serving. Top with additional garnishes like fresh sliced strawberries or raspberries for added sweetness and color. Or, lightly dust each serving with cocoa powder or confectioner’s sugar. Store leftovers in a cool place since this cake is best served slightly warm or at room temperature.

Ingredients

All-purpose flour

1 cup(s)

Unsweetened cocoa powder

½ cup(s)

Baking soda

1 tsp

Sugar

¾ cup(s)

Liquid egg substitute

¼ cup(s)

Reduced-calorie margarine

3 Tbsp, melted

Unsweetened applesauce

1 cup(s)

Light aerosol whipped cream

½ cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray.
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda and sugar. Beat together egg substitute, margarine and applesauce; blend into dry ingredients.
  3. Spoon mixture into pan and smooth top. Bake until cake feels slightly firm in center, about 25 minutes. Cool completely before cutting into 8 pieces. Top each piece with 1 tablespoon of whipped topping.
