Everything you need to know about tirzepatide

What is compounded semaglutide?

Compounded semaglutide is custom-made weight-loss medications sold through specialized pharmacies. These medications are “identical to or nearly identical to” FDA-approved GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Once an FDA-approved medication appears on the FDA drug shortages list, the FDA allows the manufacture of compounded medications.

How does WeightWatchers source compounded semaglutide?

WeightWatchers Clinic clinicians only prescribe compounded GLP-1s manufactured by a 503B outsourcing facility registered with the FDA. WeightWatchers partners with Olympia Pharmacy to provide compounded semaglutide.

How does WeightWatchers guarantee quality and safety?

WeightWatchers Clinic prioritizes the safety of the compounded GLP-1 weight-loss medications our clinicians prescribe.

What is tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injectable medication, available under brand names like Mounjaro® and Zepbound®, specifically designed to help adults with diabetes and obesity. As a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, it closely mirrors the natural hormones your body releases after eating, making it easier to manage blood sugar and support healthy weight loss. Tirzepatide works best when combined with healthy lifestyle habits, like nutritious eating and regular physical activity, helping you reach your wellness goals more effectively.
How does tirzepatide work?
Tirzepatide works by mimicking two important hormones your body naturally produces: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). GLP-1 helps your pancreas release insulin, keeping your blood sugar levels steady, slows digestion so you feel fuller for longer, and works on the brain to decrease appetite. GIP also boosts insulin production, slows digestion, and may even help break down body fat faster. Together, these hormones create a powerful combined effect, making tirzepatide especially effective for managing blood sugar and supporting weight loss.
What are the side effects of tirzepatide?
While tirzepatide is generally well-tolerated, some side effects can occur as your body adjusts, especially when starting or increasing your dosage. Common side effects include nausea, acid reflux, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, dizziness, mood changes, and injection-site reactions like redness, itching, or mild pain.

More serious—but less common—side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, worsening diabetic eye conditions, kidney problems, allergic reactions, or low blood sugar. It's important to let your WW clinician know immediately if side effects become bothersome or affect your quality of life. Your clinician will help you navigate any issues and adjust your treatment to keep your weight-loss journey comfortable, safe, and effective.

Common questions we hear

What is WeightWatchers Clinic?
WeightWatchers Clinic is a telehealth clinic that focuses on weight-loss management using behavior change and effective weight-loss medications. It provides members with ongoing, comprehensive access to a dedicated Care Team including doctors, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, and fitness coaches; 1:1 virtual support; an award-winning app; and a supportive community.
What medication do you prescribe?
The exact medication that your Clinician will prescribe depends on your medical history, biology, and insurance coverage. When appropriate, your Clinician may prescribe FDA-approved GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (brand name Wegovy), liraglutide (brand name Saxenda), or tirzepatide (brand name Zepbound). When appropriate, your clinician may prescribe other medications with which other members have found success such as Metformin and combination Naltrexone and Bupropion. If your treatment plan isn’t working for you, talk to your WeightWatchers Clinic Care Team about adjustments or alternative plans.
Please note, some GLP-1 medications are experiencing intermittent nationwide shortages. See which medications are affected on the FDA shortage database.
Is medication included in my membership fee?
It depends on your treatment plan. For GLP-1 medications, your medications are not included, but your Care Team will work with you to get your medication covered by insurance and send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy. If insurance covers your medication, you may still be responsible for a copay.

For non-GLP-1 medications, like oral agents Bupropion + Naltrexone, the cost of membership will include your estimated medication fee when you choose our preferred mail-order pharmacy, Carepoint.

Carepoint's address is 9 Commerce Dr, Schaumburg, IL 60173.
