Kam lost 59 lbs*

*At 6 months, participants in a clinical trial of the WW weight-loss program lost an average of 9.7 lbs (5% of body weight). And, people who track their food more often lose more weight. When actual WW members track their food at least two times a week for 6 months they lose on average 16.6 lbs. (7.9% body weight). Kam lost weight on a prior program and is continuing on WeightWatchers. Watch Kam’s journey of creating a healthy home for her son in the video below.

In Kam’s words:
I always knew I wanted to have kids by the time I was 30 years old. But as that birthday approached, I didn’t feel ready. My husband, Doug, and I had just moved to Washington and I didn’t have a job. Plus, I didn’t feel my healthiest: Portion control was never my strong suit. In college, we had this panini press and I’d eat two grilled cheeses for breakfast! It continued after I got married — my husband and I loved cooking, plus we had twice as many social events. I started not to like how I felt, and toward my 30s, I wanted to change.

Raising a healthy family

Getting prepared
I realized that this was my only chance to focus on myself before we grew our family. I wanted to be as healthy as I could be, so that I could raise healthy children, too. I got laser eye surgery so that I wouldn’t have to worry about my vision, and I joined WW to take control of my weight. I joined back in 2000, when it was all pen and paper. I had a little journal where I would track all of my food. Though I didn’t have the technology, which makes the program so easy now, I was able to learn portion control, and I started moving more, and that helped me drop the pounds and reach my goal in 2001.

Becoming parents
When we adopted our son, Harmeet, in 2005, I felt like I could be the fit mom I always wanted to be. Ever since he was a small boy, we’ve been sharing healthy eating lessons with him. Of course, I’m not too restrictive with Harmeet — I buy him treats or snacks that he can enjoy. But sometimes, if he’ll ask me for a cookie before dinner, I’ll say no, and then he’ll ask for an apple instead. That just makes me smile. We rarely go out for pizza, but when we do, he’ll say to me, “Mom, the pizza you make at home tastes better.” And that’s a cue for me to get back to being creative in the kitchen.

How Kam’s success with WW has improved her life

Setting up your space
I think that part of the reason why Harmeet makes good choices — and why I’ve been able to keep off the weight for 17 years — is because of the environment at home. I surround myself with healthy choices. We have several fruit bowls placed around the kitchen to help us pick the right foods to eat. I also know the value of everything I’m eating — I write the WeightWatchers value on every recipe that I cook or bake!

Staying active as a family
I'll always remember what my first WW Coach used to say in our WW Workshops, “You never feel worse after a workout.” I’m always telling myself, “Just stay active, however you can.” Our son definitely keeps us moving — he has so much energy. We’re huge Seattle Seahawks fans, so we’ll toss the football back and forth. Or we’ll play soccer at a nearby park. We also make a point to walk or bike to stores or restaurants nearby instead of taking the car. He’s learned by example, and that makes me so proud.
