Women: how to stay healthy for life

Published 6 February, 2017

Eating well and keeping active is a great start, but there’s even more you could be doing to take better care of your health…

Get tested
Regular cervical smear tests can help detect pre-cancerous cervical cells or early signs of cervical cancer. Check in with your doctor about when and how often you should have your test.

Drink less
Some studies show that women who regularly consume three or more alcoholic drinks a week have a 15 per cent higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who are teetotal. So it’s worth cutting down and having plenty of booze-free periods.

Eat flaxseed
Ground flaxseed could help reduce hot flushes and joint pain, and improve mood in some menopausal women. Sprinkle a tablespoonful on cereal or stir into porridge and smoothies.

Have a cuppa
Research conducted in Australia indicates that drinking coffee could help reduce your risk of uterine cancer, when combined with the maintenance of a healthy weight and an active lifestyle.

Talk to your GP
If you notice anything irregular about your body, including unusual lumps, irregular bleeding, or new hormonal symptoms, it’s worth checking in with your doctor. They’ll be able to rule out anything serious, and if they do find something amiss, they’ll be able to treat it early.
