4 ways to banish negative thoughts – for good!

Published 27 March, 2017

Struggling with negativity? It can put a damper on your mood, your health, and your success. The good news is there are lots of easy ways to change your thought patterns so you can get back to being positive and feeling good right now…

Write a letter
Know someone who you consider to be a positive influence on your life? One study showed that writing letters of gratitude to friends, family, and others who have supported or helped you in some way can actually improve your own life satisfaction and happiness.

Set the agenda
Don’t think: ‘It’s going to be one of those days,’ just because you’ve had a rough morning. If you think it will be a bad day, it probably will be. Instead, think: ‘Today will be a good day’, and focus on enjoying it.

Find the feel-good factor
What helps you to feel more positive and energised? Whatever it is, do more of it. Fitness can be a good place to start, but it could be as simple as calling a friend or reading a bit of your favourite book. Helping someone out, whether it’s volunteering for a charity or assisting a neighbour, can also raise your spirits.

Tear up old grudges
Bearing a grudge can elevate your heart rate, raise your blood pressure, and increase muscle tension – not to mention lead to feelings of being out of control. Try ridding yourself of those negative thoughts by jotting down how you feel – and then, when you’ve got it all down on paper, throw the note away and let go of the negative thoughts for good.
