Keep active this summer holiday
We’ve all been there: jetting off on a summer holiday can mean your exercise routine flies out the door. But just because you can’t manage your usual workout doesn’t mean you should forgo fitness altogether. The holidays are a really positive time for your fitness – it’s a chance to try something different which is good for your body as it becomes quite complacent when doing the same exercises over and over. Take advantage of your holidays and shake up your routine. Here are a few suggestions on how to keep moving when you’re away from home.
1. Pack your trainers
Always pack my trainers, because no matter where you are, you can always walk. This is particularly good if you’ve flown overseas. Going for a walk or jog in a new city is a great way to get the lay of the land and sometimes find some hidden gems that you wouldn't have come across otherwise. You only need to do 30 to 40 minutes each morning, then you’ll be energised for the day.
2. Get organised
When going camping you have access to a plethora of great physical activities like hiking, swimming, kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddle boarding – the key is to plan your activity or the days will just pass by.
3. Book a hotel with a pool
Get up early before the pool is crowded and swim some laps. If that’s not possible, doing your own mini-gym circuit in your room. Go for a walk, and when you get back, do a routine with push-ups, sit-ups, triceps dips, squats and lunges.
4. Pack a resistance band
They’re a great idea for the regular traveller as you can do an amazing full-body workout that will help you stay on track and even progress. Using a resistance band doesn't necessarily mean scheduling a 40-minute workout. Ten minutes before you jump in the shower can be enough.
5. Bring an active game
Playing family games outside is a great way to stay fit. Look to find ways to be active that wouldn't normally be available if you weren't on holiday. Try beach cricket, throwing a Frisbee or playing water polo in the pool.
6. Make it a group activity
Get the whole family involved. Tell everyone you're planning to do some form of exercise in the morning, such as a quick power walk, run, stairs session or body-weight circuit in the park – and invite them to join you. This way, you increase your accountability as others will either join you or ask you how it went after your proposed exercise time.
7. Communicate well
If you are a house guest, let your hosts know you’ll be going for a daily walk. It gives them a break from you and you a break from them. Plus you can explore the area and get moving. Just be sure to it around their routine. If you’re going for a day out, find out what time they want to leave and let them know you’ll get up an hour earlier and go for a walk.
8. Do circuit training
No matter how basic your campsite, you can always do a body-weight circuit. To make it even more fun, create a fitness challenge for the family. For instance, how many squats can you do in one minute? Or how long can you hold your plank? Then try to beat it the next day. If the weather’s hot, get up early before the sun’s too strong.
