Most dump cake recipes follow a certain formula: Spoon canned pie filling into a casserole dish, sprinkle on dry cake mix, top with lots of melted butter, and bake. For our apple dump cake, we wanted to spotlight fresh apples for their sweet-tart flavor and tender-but-not-mushy texture. We still use boxed cake mix for convenience, but we combine it with a little applesauce and apple cider to amp up the fruity goodness. The finished dessert is like a cross between a snack cake and a cobbler.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Apple

6 cup(s), peeled and chopped

Ground cinnamon

1 tsp(s)

Regular enriched yellow cake dry mix

15¼ oz

Unsweetened applesauce

¾ cup(s)

Apple cider

½ cup(s)

Fat free vanilla Greek yogurt

15 tbsp(s), or fat free plain Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 13 x 9–inch baking dish with cooking spray. Spoon the apples into the dish and sprinkle with the cinnamon; toss gently to combine.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the cake mix, applesauce, and cider. Pour the cake mix mixture over the apples. Bake until the topping is golden and slightly crisp, 45 to 50 minutes. Slice into 12 pieces and serve warm; top each serving with 1 tbsp yogurt.
