The WW Science team is led by Dr. Gary Foster, Ph.D., a psychologist and obesity investigator who specializes in behaviour change. The author of more than 225 scientific publications and three books, Gary oversees the science-based WW program and its innovations, plus the company’s clinical research initiatives.
Dr. Foster recently spoke with the Toronto Sun about WW’s science-backed approach.
Obesity in Canada
In 2020 WW received the highest possible ranking among commercial weight loss programs in the new Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines.
According to the new Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, WW is the commercial program with the highest quality of evidence to demonstrate that it works for weight loss.
WW Canada supports the new Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines’ focus on improved health and quality of life, and we support the position that obesity is a complex chronic disease requiring lifelong support.

Dr. Foster's Top Tips
Set goals that are specific and reasonable but not drastic.
A plan to walk for 20 minutes twice a week is more attainable than the general thought, “I will start walking.” Be wary of drastic extremes like, “I will never eat cookies again!” With WW, all foods are on the menu, which helps make weight loss sustainable because you don’t need to deprive yourself of the foods you enjoy.
Expect setbacks
It’s about progress not perfection. The path to wellness is not a straight line, expecting bumps in the road can help you manage setbacks and celebrate successes.
Practice self-compassion
Treat yourself with the same compassion you would a friend, it can help you stick to the journey in the long-run.
