Staying Healthy on a Business Trip

Four tips to keep you on track.

As most of you already know, traveling for work isn’t the most glamourous perk. Those of us who frequent the hotel life already know this, but eating out every night and sleeping in a strange hotel bed loses its sparkle pretty quickly.

And one of the most difficult things to accomplish while on a work trip is staying healthy. Right off the top, you’ve already got so many things going against you. Traveling to a different time zone can really screw up your routine, not knowing the area and where to get a healthy meal can be tough, and just being in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar environment can really throw you off. But don’t worry, here are four ways to stay healthy on that business trip.

Don’t Adjust to The Time Zone

Depending on the length of your business trip and where you’re traveling too, try to avoid letting your body adjust to the time zone if possible. If you’re waking up 3 hours earlier than usual, go with it, and just make sure to go to sleep 3 hours early that night.

Same goes for your meals. We are creatures of habit and changing our routines for a short period of time can be difficult on our bodies. Try to remain as consistent as possible when it comes to healthy living, especially if you’re just starting out.

Don’t Rely on The Gym

Although most hotels have a gym, the equipment inside is hardly ever the same. Some are fully equipped with free weights, but don’t have a treadmill. Others are full of stationary bikes, but no elliptical machines. If you require specific gym equipment for your regular workout, you should plan for 1-2 alternatives just in case. For instance, try taking the stairs, walking the city, or renting a bike instead of relying on the gym having the gear you need.

Find A Pool

One of the best workouts you can get is swimming, and hotel pools are quite consistent. Pack some swimwear, and when you check in, make sure to ask about the pool hours. Swimming is great for cardio, and when you’re pressed for time, you can actually get in a great workout in just a few minutes.

Go DIY And Make A Grocery Run

This is probably one of the most important things when you’re trying to stay healthy on a work trip. A grocery store will be your saviour because it gives you access to fresh produce.

As great as the breakfast buffet sounds, you probably don’t want to have it every morning. Instead, head to the grocery store and pick up a few bananas, buy a pre-packaged fruit salad or some granola to kick-start your day. Grocery stores are great to just stock up on some of your daily essentials.
