Erica always looked at losing weight as a short-term process. But when she committed to Weight Watchers meetings, she learned that her journey was a lifelong one. She learned the importance of portion control, started working out more often and made lots of small goals that all added up to a huge loss: 110 pounds!*

Erica:

I started trying to lose weight because I was realizing that I couldn’t shop in certain stores because they didn’t have my size. I couldn’t wear the styles that I wanted to or buy the things I wanted to. I also wasn’t as confident trying new things when it came to fitness or other social activities. The weight was always hanging over my head and it really just kept me from being me. I’d been overweight since I was little. I was very fortunate in that I wasn’t really discriminated against or teased or bullied, but I knew that as I got older it would start to affect my health. I wanted to get a grasp on it before it became a real issue. That’s when I decided to join Weight Watchers meeting and start following the Plan.

Why Weight Watchers?

I knew from watching other people around me try to lose weight that I didn’t want to do the latest fad diet or something that was a quick fix.

I really needed to learn how to eat appropriately and learn about portions. That’s when I knew it was going to be a lifelong journey. I thought the fact that I could eat a variety of foods and still go out with my friends and have cocktails made it a good fit for me.

Making changes

Before starting Weight Watchers, I wasn’t paying attention to my portion sizes. I felt like I was eating the right things, but was just eating too much of them. I started exercising a lot more, which isn’t just good for losing weight, but for my stress level and state of mind as well. I think after I started seeing results from that, I think that helped push me and motivate me to keep up my healthy eating habits.

The daily grind

I’m a speech pathologist and I work with special ed. three to five-year-olds. At work I bring my lunch every day. The night before or in the morning I take out my fruits, vegetables and snacks. Then I don’t have to think about it because I’ve already pre-portioned them out. It’s a lot of planning beforehand, but when I’m in a hurry I can just grab and go. I don’t have to think about it.

Meetings matter

I was fortunate enough to find a really good leader at my Saturday morning meetings that was really supportive and honest. She herself had lost a good deal of weight on Weight Watchers so she was very real and truthful about everything. It was also great to see the same people coming back week to week, so they were all very supportive of my journey and helpful with tips and ideas. Or even if I was just having a bad week, knowing I had their support really helped.

The importance of eTools

You can attend as many meetings as you want with Monthly Pass, but if there’s a hectic week, it’s comforting to know that I can go on the Web site if I can’t go to a meeting. I get ideas, recipes and encouragement. I also love the message boards because if I post a question, I find that the answers I receive are pretty immediate. The app on my phone also makes it easy to track when I’m not in front of the computer. At times when I’m eating on the go, it’s great to be able to go to certain restaurants or drive-thrus and find out their nutrition info and SmartPoints values.

What’s changed?

Losing weight has definitely made me more confident. My friends always saw the real me, but the fact that they saw me conquer this battle was really great. Having their support was amazing. I just feel so much more confident. It’s nice to know that my weight isn’t the first thing people notice anymore. And they’re looking at me more for what I’m capable of than what I look like. Now that I’ve lost weight, people are seeing the real me and not just seeing me as a heavy person.

The new Erica

If someone told me back then that I was going to lose 110 pounds, I wouldn’t have believed them. Initially I started losing my 10% and setting small goals for myself. I would just take it 10 pounds at a time and really get excited each time I hit one of those milestones. It’s definitely possible. I’d tell people that it’s a lifelong journey and to be patient. You’re more likely to stick with the plan if you take it slow. Now I’ve discovered my true potential. I had no idea how determined and strong I could be before starting this journey.

Erica’s Tips
  • Look at the message boards for inspiration and try new recipes often so you don’t get bored.
     
  • Make your shopping list before you go so you know exactly what to buy. And don’t go shopping when you’re hungry.
  • Take your SmartPoints calculator to the grocery store. I’ll also often bring a black Sharpie marker and write the SmartPoints values on the package right then and there so when I’m home and want to grab something I don’t need to figure anything out.
  • Going out to a restaurant isn’t just a free pass to go out and eat whatever you want. You can still do those things, but just try to make the healthiest choices you can.
  • Treat yourself to the things you really love, but don’t over-indulge. I actually realized that my treats actually taste better now because I’m not having them as often.
