Selena’s weight loss journey

Selena was determined to turn her health around after celebrating her 40th birthday feeling tired and flat. Having tried to do that several times without much success, she was contemplating weight-loss surgery – and then she found WeightWatchers. Selena lost 30kg over 2 years but during COVID, Selena faced some challenges along the way. Now, she’s back on track and aiming for progress over perfection.

Selena’s ‘why’

“When I turned 40 in 2017, I felt old and tired – and was determined to do something about it. I’d had back surgery the year before after living with pain for years, and was experiencing debilitating migraines, too. I knew I had to improve my health so I could avoid future issues and the key was losing some weight to take the pressure off my back.”

Selena before and after

Why did you join WW?

I’d tried a number of diets and none of them worked, so I booked in for weight-loss surgery. But a week out from my operation, I decided I couldn’t go through with it. I joined WW instead and instantly started seeing results. And I’m happy to say that after losing weight I can count on one hand the number of migraines I’ve had.

How did COVID affect your weight loss journey?

COVID has a big affect on me - along with grief of losing my mum, my anxiety sky rocketed as I started a new job in IT so this saw me seek comfort in my old habits of high calorie foods.

How did you go back to basics?

Tracking my food and focusing on health. That means vegetables and salads along with most meals and getting my water in. The simplest things are often the ones that have the most impact.

What’s your advice for getting back on track?

Step back and see the bigger picture. We have come through a pandemic that changed the world – we are here still and doing our best. Be kinder on ourselves and seeing our small steps to be healthier as wins, after all, what is perfection anyway!

What was it like being part of the WW TV shoot?

An absolutely awesome experience! I felt so beautiful and glamorous. I truly believe all women no matter your age, size, shape can feel and look their best. So even though I’m not at my goal or even close, I deserve to feel great and that was my take away from the amazing TV shoot. Meeting fellow members Flo, Maggie and Ruth and of course Jacqui O was SUCH a highlight!

Why does the WW program work for you?

WW is different from other diet plans, because nothing’s off limits. You can eat everything you love and lose weight at the same time. But the reason it works is because it’s about more than just the food. The support you get at WW is incredible and is what’s helped me be successful. The encouragement, understanding and motivation I receive from my WW community is the key ingredient that have made such a big difference, compared to all the other times I’ve tried to lose weight in the past.

How do you use ZeroPoint foods?

The variety of ZeroPoint™ foods works really well for me because it provides me with flexibility and the ability to build my meals around zero Points options. I keep an eye on my portion sizes and allows me to still go out and enjoy restaurant meals with my friends. Nothing is off limits, I just work it into my day.

What do you like about the WW app?

I love being able to search for recipes that suit the ingredients I have in the fridge or based on how much time I’ve got to make a meal but for me, the best thing about it is that, being an app on your phone, you can take it with you everywhere. My favourite way to use it is to check out my choices when I’m eating out.

“Cooking has always been one of the ways I relax, and nothing about that had to change since joining WW. I still enjoy finding new recipes and trying them out, and WW has so many delicious ones to choose from. But the thing I get the biggest kick out of is being creative and WW-ifying other recipes, including those favourites I’ve been cooking and enjoying for years. It’s really simple to do, once you know how.”

How has your life changes?

I am a lot more active and I choose the active option every time now. Walking as catch ups with friends, gym classes with friends. I just felt when I was larger, I felt like I lived a lot smaller. I didn’t want to speak up in meetings at work, and I didn’t want to go hiking on holidays, I just wanted to sit down. I wasn’t up for trying new things. Now I feel like I live a bigger life – I eat big portions of food, I do big exercises at the gym and I go on active holidays. I don’t feel like I’m hiding anymore. I’m confident and more accepting of who I am.
