The Truth About Spot-Reducing

Can you really target belly (or thigh, or arm) flab?

It's a common question, many people have when it comes to exercise. "Is it possible to spot-reduce flabby areas?"

It'd be fantastic if that was not only possible but easy to do — unfortunately, it's a fitness myth. The simple truth is: There’s just no way to selectively lose fat from a particular place on your body. You might think it would be possible, since you can build muscle mass in different locations (depending on the exercises you do), but no amount of crunches or leg lifts or squats will spot reduce body fat.

But this doesn’t mean you’re stuck with your love handles, muffin top or saddlebags forever. The best way to lose body fat is to consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein (which you’re likely already doing) and crank up your cardio workouts. Doing aerobic activity for 30 minutes or longer per day will burn body fat while also improving your cardiovascular fitness level.

You can help tone your trouble spots and gain greater muscle definition by doing strength-training exercises for the muscles in your abdomen, hips, butt, thighs, and so on. This will help you look fitter, firmer and slimmer.
