Toasty porridge with spiced apple compote

Creamy porridge is topped with spiced stewed apple and yogurt. Toasting the oats first gives the porridge a lovely nutty flavour.


Cooking Apple

1 medium

Lemon Juice, Fresh

1 teaspoons

Cloves, Whole or Ground

1 individual

Ground Cinnamon

1 pinch

Artificial sweetener

1 teaspoons

Porridge oats

60 g

Skimmed Milk

400 ml

0% fat natural Greek yogurt

1 tablespoons

Mixed Spice

½ teaspoons, level


  1. Put the apple in a small lidded pan with the lemon juice, a teaspoon of water and the clove and cinnamon. Cover and cook gently for 5 minutes or until the apple starts to break up (add another teaspoon of water if it starts to look dry), then stir in the sweetener. Cover to keep warm.
  2. Meanwhile, put the oats in a nonstick pan and toast them over a medium-high heat for a couple of minutes or until fragrant. Add the milk, turn the heat down and slowly bring to the boil, stirring with the handle of a wooden spoon.
  3. Simmer on the lowest heat, stirring often, for 8-10 minutes, or until cooked and creamy. Spoon into bowls and top with the apple compote and a trickle of cold milk around the edge. Serve with the yogurt and a sprinkle of mixed spice.
