Cheeseburgers with grilled onions
The secret to a juicy, lean burger is to avoid pressing down on the burger while it's cooking so it retains its juices. Sweet yet savoury grilled onions bump up the flavour and make these burgers taste deliciously gourmet
Extra lean beef mince (5% fat), raw
1 clove(s), crushed
Half Fat Cheddar Cheese
55 g, grated
½ small, cut into 4 thin slices
1 teaspoon(s), level
1 large, sliced
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- In a medium bowl, gently combine the mince, garlic with salt & pepper and form into 4 burger patties. Place on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes, then flip and continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes or until cooked through. Top each burger with 2 tbsp cheese and cook for about 1 minute, until the cheese melts. Step 3
- Meanwhile, brush both sides of the onion with oil. Grill until the bottom is lightly browned, for 3-4 minutes. Flip the onion and sprinkle with oregano; grill 2-3 minutes more.
- Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill. Place the cooked burgers on the buns and top each with 1 slice onion (separated into rings) and 2 tomato slices.
To avoid watering eyes when prepping the onions, peel and chill them before slicing into rings. They’ll stay intact while flipping them on the grill if you use a large pair tongs instead of a spatula. This recipe only calls for topping the burgers with tomatoes but a handful of rocket, spinach or other tender lettuce leaves would make a tasty addition too.
