Apple butter is such a versatile topping and this slow cooker version couldn’t be easier to make. Mix some apple butter into your oatmeal or yogurt, spread it on turkey sandwiches, dollop it on your pancakes or waffles, or use it in dessert pizza. If you don’t have an immersion blender, use a food processor or blender to puree the mixture instead.

Ingredients

Apple

6 large, cored and chopped (Honeycrisp suggested; about 3 1/4 lb)

Ground allspice

tsp

Ground nutmeg

tsp

Ground ginger

tsp

Cinnamon stick

2 item(s)

Instructions

  1. In a slow cooker, combine the apples, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks. Cook on low for 10 hours and up to 18 hours for a deeper amber color and flavor.
  2. Remove the cinnamon sticks. Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth (if your slow cooker has a nonstick base, do not blend in the cooker or you can scratch the surface). Let the apple butter cool completely, then refrigerate it in an air-tight container for up to 5 days (or freeze if you have leftovers).
  3. Serving size: about 2 tbsp
