This is a delicious, hearty version of Philadelphia's favorite street food but with a twist: we use lean chicken breast instead of fatty beef. We also developed them with low-fat American cheese, but any low-fat cheese can be used. These sandwiches come together in half an hour and you need just one skillet to make them. First sauté some thinly sliced onions, then add the chicken, red peppers, salt, and black pepper and heat 'em up together until the chicken is cooked through. Arrange the cheese in a hot dog bun, spoon the chicken mixture inside, and your sandwiches are ready to go. They're so full of flavor, you won't even miss the steak.

Ingredients
Canola oil
1 Tbsp
Onion
1 medium, thinly sliced
Uncooked skinless boneless chicken breast
1 pound(s), pounded, cut into strips
Red bell pepper
½ medium, thinly sliced
Table salt
½ tsp
Black pepper
⅛ tsp
Low fat American cheese
4 slice(s)
Reduced calorie hot dog bun
4 bun(s), toasted
Instructions
1
Heat oil in medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring frequently, until browned and very soft, about 10 minutes. Add chicken, bell pepper, salt, and black pepper; cook until chicken is golden brown and cooked through, 5−8 minutes.
2
Place 1 slice American cheese in each bun. Spoon chicken mixture down center of each bun. Close bun to help cheese melt slightly.
