When you pile all kinds of tasty nacho toppings onto a lean beef burger, you’re in for a real treat. Refried beans, mashed avocado, salsa, and pepper Jack cheese adorn grilled patties that take on bold flavor from a quick, easy taco seasoning mix made from chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. (For convenience, you could also use a packet of lower-sodium taco seasoning.) Though you can use a stovetop grill pan, you’ll get the most robust flavor by cooking the patties on an outdoor grill.

Instructions

  1. Coat an outdoor grill rack with cooking spray. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the beef, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and ½ tsp salt; mix well with your hands. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions, shaping each into a 3 ½-inch (bun-sized) patty. Arrange the patties on the grill rack; close the lid and grill until the bottoms of the patties are well marked, about 5 minutes. Turn the patties over, close the lid, and grill until almost done, about 4 minutes. Top the patties evenly with cheese; grill until the cheese melts, about 1 minute.
  3. In a small bowl, mash together the avocado with the remaining ⅛ tsp salt. Spread 2 tbsp beans over the bottom half of each bun. Top each with 1 patty, one-fourth of the avocado, 1 tbsp salsa, and the top half of the bun.
