Tired of burgers? Tempeh (soybean cake), with its nutty flavor, provides a wonderful alternative to meat. This vegetarian dish contains just 4 ingredients and comes together quickly. We steamed the tempeh before grilling it to soften its chewy texture, which is an important step in the recipe. It also opens the tempeh so that the barbecue sauce can better penetrate the tempeh. Be sure not to overcook the tempeh when steaming it. While the tempeh steams, you can sauté the onions. Serve the tempeh with homemade sweet potato fries.

Ingredients

Uncooked tempeh

10 oz, sliced into sixteen 1/4-inch-thick pieces

Onion

1 medium, sliced

Sesame oil

1 tsp

Barbecue sauce

1 cup(s)

Instructions

  1. Steam tempeh for 20 minutes to prevent it from drying out when grilled. While tempeh is steaming, sauté onion in sesame oil over medium-high heat until very tender and golden, about 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat grill. Brush tempeh slices with barbecue sauce and grill for 5 minutes on each side, brushing generously with sauce as it cooks.
  3. Top tempeh with onions and serve with additional sauce on the side. Yields about four slices tempeh plus 1/4 cup onions per serving.
