What makes these lean chicken burgers so moist and rich-tasting? The combo of shredded apple, onion, and sage. A creamy drizzle of blue cheese dressing puts them over the top. If you’d like, double up when you make the burger patties and freeze extras for later.

Ingredients

Uncooked boneless skinless chicken breast

1 pound(s)

Fresh unpeeled Gala apple slices

cup(s), or Fuji, shredded

Red onion

3 tbsp(s), chopped, finely chopped

Whole wheat panko breadcrumbs

3 tbsp(s)

Fresh sage

1 tbsp(s), finely chopped

Hot pepper sauce

1 tbsp(s)

Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp(s)

Table salt

¼ tsp(s)

Table salt

1 pinch(es)

Gorgonzola cheese

¼ cup(s), chopped, or other blue cheese, crumbled

1% low-fat buttermilk

2 tbsp(s)

Mayonnaise

2 tsp(s)

Black pepper

tsp(s)

Thin whole wheat sandwich bread (roll)

4 item(s), split and toasted

Tomato

1 small, sliced

Boston lettuce

4 leaf/leaves, small size, or Bibb lettuce leaves

Instructions

  1. Combine chicken, apple, onion, panko, sage, pepper sauce, Worcestershire, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in large bowl. With damp hands, form mixture into 4 (1/2-inch-thick) patties. Lightly spray patties on both sides with nonstick spray.
  2. Set nonstick ridged grill pan over medium heat. Place patties on pan and cook until browned and instant-read thermometer inserted into side of burger registers 165°F, 4–5 minutes per side.
  3. Meanwhile, to make dressing, stir together Gorgonzola, buttermilk, mayonnaise, pepper, and remaining pinch salt in small bowl. Serve burgers in sandwich thins topped with dressing, tomato, and lettuce.
  4. Serving size: 1 burger and 1 tablespoon dressing

Notes

Serving idea: Baked sweet potato fries are a quick and easy side for these burgers. Put 1 1/2 ounces of fries in the oven for each serving you want. Start baking them just before you begin prepping the burgers and both will be done at about the same time.
