What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s). GLP-1 is a hormone produced naturally in the body that helps regulate appetite and food intake by working on both the gut and the brain. Wegovy is FDA approved for weight reduction and management in adults with obesity, or overweight with weight-related comorbidities.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy mimics the effects of GLP-1, reducing hunger and cravings by targeting receptors in the gut and brain. This can help individuals eat less and lose weight.
Is Wegovy covered by insurance?
Your Med+ Care Team will work directly with your insurance provider to help you navigate your coverage of this GLP-1 medication. The cost of the medication is not included as part of the Weight Watchers Med+ membership and insurance coverage may vary.
At this time, our Insurance Coordinators can only work with commercial insurance plans.
This means that members with government-sponsored insurance, those on a Kaiser plan, or those without insurance will need to consider one of the following options: (1) pay out of pocket for a GLP-1 medication or (2) if clinically eligible, use a non-GLP-1 medication that is included in the cost of a Weight Watchers Med+ membership.
If you continue, you will be evaluated for the membership-included medications to see if your Clinician thinks you're a good fit, or choose to pay without insurance for GLP-1 medications.
weight loss*

Wegovy mimics a natural hormone, GLP-1, to help you feel full and reduce hunger. This can help eligible individuals eat less, which can lead to an average weight loss of 15% when combined with diet and exercise.

The FDA has also approved Wegovy to help reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, like heart attack or stroke, in adults with known cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight.
*Eligible patients with a BMI of ≥30, or ≥27 with comorbidities, lost an average of 15% of their body weight (-33.6 lbs) in a 68-week clinical trial evaluating 2.4 mg semaglutide, when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. ^In a multi-national, double-blind clinical trial of over 17,000 patients with BMI of 27 or greater, weekly injections of semaglutide for a mean duration of 33 months reduced the risk of a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke by 20%.
