What is Ozempic?
Ozempic (semaglutide) belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s). GLP-1 is a hormone produced naturally in the body that helps regulate appetite, food intake, and glucose levels by working on both the gut and the brain. Ozempic is a once-weekly injectable medication FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
How does Ozempic work?
Ozempic mimics the effects of GLP-1, which plays a key role in regulating blood sugar and appetite. It stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin when you eat, slows digestion, and decreases appetite, which can help control blood glucose levels and contribute to weight loss.
Is Ozempic covered by insurance?
Your Med+ Care Team will work directly with your insurance provider to help you navigate your coverage of this GLP-1 medication. The cost of the medication is not included as part of the Weight Watchers Med+ membership and insurance coverage may vary.
At this time, our Insurance Coordinators can only work with commercial insurance plans.
This means that members with government-sponsored insurance, those on a Kaiser plan, or those without insurance will need to consider one of the following options: (1) pay out of pocket for a GLP-1 medication or (2) if clinically eligible, use a non-GLP-1 medication that is included in the cost of a Weight Watchers Med+ membership.
If you continue, you will be evaluated for the membership-included medications to see if your Clinician thinks you're a good fit, or choose to pay without insurance for GLP-1 medications.
blood sugar and A1C

Ozempic mimics a natural hormone, GLP-1, to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes along with diet and exercise, which may contribute to weight loss of up to 6% of body weight on average.*
Major Heart Events and Kidney Disease

The FDA has approved Ozempic to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events like stroke or heart attack, in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The FDA also has approved Ozempic to reduce the risk of worsening kidney disease or kidney failure, in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
* Patients with diabetes lost an average of 6.4% of their body weight in a clinical trial evaluating 2.0 mg semaglutide over 40 weeks.

After 1 year, WW Med+ members prescribed weight management medications who added the WW Points program lost 8% more weight than WW Med+ members who did not.**
**Based on observational study of 1400 Med+ members who added the WW Points program to their membership and lost -17.7% body weight on average, compared to 2606 Med+ members who did not start a WW membership during this timeframe and lost -16.4% body weight on average.
