Pick Your (High-Protein) Pint

Your guide to low-cal ice creams by Breyers, Enlightened, and Halo Top

A scoop of ice cream on a hot afternoon is the ultimate summer treat, but the high points could make you second-guess the indulgence. For less than 4 SmartPoints per serving, high-protein ice creams satisfy the craving by delivering pints of decadent flavor.

With the plethora of options crowding the freezer aisle, it’s hard to decide which flavor and brand to choose. That’s where the Weight Watchers editors’ spoons come in. We tasted more than 30 pints—from Breyers Delights, Enlightened, and Halo Top—commented on each, and voted on which brand did its best, to help you pick your perfect pint.

If you love the classics, opt for…

Breyers Delights Chocolate: Although Enlightened’s and Halo Top’s chocolate ranked high in our taste test, Breyers won over the majority with its rich chocolate flavor and creamy texture.

Breyers Delights Vanilla Bean: Our testers loved the natural taste of this ice cream made with real vanilla bean and fresh cream. It’s basic and delicious.

If you’re adventurous, opt for…

Enlightened Banana Foster: This flavor was so good, it earned a special shout-out from a few of our testers who loved the caramel ribbons swirled in banana ice cream. One said this flavor made her switch to team Enlightened.

Enlightened Black Cherry Chocolate Chip: Testers enjoyed the black cherry and chocolate chips that balanced the flavor between tart and sweet. “It felt like eating real ice cream,” said one tester.

If you’re craving cookies, opt for…

Enlightened Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: The loads of cookie dough chunks and chocolate chips made Enlightened’s cookie dough the popular choice. One tester said the ice-cream flavor reminded her of a freshly baked cookie.

Breyers Cookies & Cream: “Just the right combo of ice cream and cookie,” one tester said. What more could you ask for?

If mint chip is your thing, opt for…

Breyers Mint Chip: The chocolate chunks separated Breyers’ version from the others, adding sweetness to the very minty flavor. But if you’re looking for a duller mint, Halo Top’s will fill your fix without the chocolate chunks, said a tester.

If you want more bang for your SmartPoints, opt for…

Breyers Delights: While Enlightened and Halo Top have a ½-cup serving size, Breyers' serving size is 2/3 cup. This size difference adds 1 SmartPoint compared with the others, depending on flavor.

If you want a variety of flavors, opt for…

Halo Top: Out of all three brands tested, Halo Top has the largest product lineup with 24 flavors. Recently, it became the best-selling ice cream brand in U.S. grocery stores. Enough said

Enlightened:  With 21 pint flavors, Enlightened  is the runner-up in variety, with flavors ranging from Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip to Strawberry Cheesecake, all below 4 SmartPoints each.
