By shellacking strawberries with a vanilla-scented, buttery, sweet-and-sour reduction, you may well morph them into one of the most sophisticated summer desserts.

Ingredients

Strawberries

4 cup(s), stemmed

Dark brown sugar

2 tbsp(s), unpacked

Balsamic vinegar

1 tbsp(s), white

Vanilla extract

2 tsp(s)

Unsalted butter

2 tsp(s), melted

Instructions

  1. Position rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Mix strawberries, sugar, vinegar, vanilla and melted butter in a 9-inch square baking dish. Bake until strawberries are soft and sauce is bubbling, about 20 minutes. Serving size: 1/2 cup

Notes

Just remember the rule: If a fresh strawberry doesn’t smell like anything, it probably won’t taste like much.
