We’ve made our version of kid-friendly sloppy joes mild enough to pass muster with even the pickiest eater, but don’t worry—there’s plenty of flavor here. Serve it with hot sauce for extra heat.

Ingredients

Olive oil

2 tsp(s)

Uncooked 93% lean ground turkey

1 pound(s), (7% fat or less)

Canned diced tomatoes

14½ oz, 1 (14 1/2-oz) can

Onion

1 small

Celery

1 stalk(s), medium, chopped

Dark brown sugar

1½ tbsp(s)

Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp(s)

Ground cumin

1½ tsp(s)

Vinegar

1 tsp(s)

Chili powder

1 tsp(s)

Kosher salt

½ tsp(s)

Plain hamburger bun

6 bun(s), whole-wheat, split and toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, warm oil. Add turkey and cook, breaking apart with wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
  2. Transfer turkey to a 5- or 6-qt slow cooker. Stir in all remaining ingredients except hamburger buns. Cover and cook until flavors blend and sauce is slightly thickened, 3 to 4 hours on High or 6 to 8 hours on Low.
  3. Spoon about 1/2 cup turkey mixture into each hamburger bun.
  4. Per serving: 1 sandwich
