There's no reason to stand on ceremony when it comes to cider — pears give this delicious drink new flavour, a little twist for a cold night.

Ingredients

Pear

2 small, peeled, cored and quartered

Apple cider

4 cup(s), or pear cider (no sugar added)

Honey

2 tbsp(s)

Cinnamon sticks

1 average

Whole cloves

tbsp(s), use 4 cloves

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer very slowly — at the merest bubble — until pears are tender, about 45 minutes.
  3. Remove and discard cinnamon stick and cloves. Pour contents of saucepan into a large blender. Remove center cap from lid, set lid in place, cover hole with a doubled clean kitchen towel and blend until smooth. If desired, reheat in a saucepan until barely bubbling. Yields about 2/3 cup per serving.

Notes

Remember the rule for choosing the best pears at the supermarket: If they don't smell like anything, they probably won't taste like anything.
