This pizza tastes fancy without requiring a lot of effort. It pairs flavour-rich toppings with a store-bought crust to create a memorable meal fast. This recipe is inspired by two Italian favourites: prosciutto cotto (ham that’s been cooked, not cured) and Gorgonzola, a lovely, creamy, blue-veined cheese with a strong, piquant flavour. The crushed red pepper adds a lovely hit of heat, but you can omit it or increase it, depending on your tolerance level. Adding the basil once the pizza comes out of the oven adds a welcome fresh finish. Pair this with a simple arugula salad tossed with a light vinaigrette.

Ingredients

Whole wheat thin pizza crust

1 crust(s), prebaked

Olive oil

2½ tsp(s)

Gorgonzola cheese

4 oz, crumbled (about 1 cup)

Red onion

½ cup(s), sliced, very thinly sliced

Cooked extra lean low sodium boneless ham

4 oz, (8 thin slices, 1/2 oz each), cut into strips

Fresh basil

cup(s), lightly packed leaves, sliced

Crushed red pepper flakes

tsp(s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. Place pizza crust on baking sheet and brush with 1 teaspoon oil. Sprinkle with cheese and onion. Bake until crust is very crisp on bottom, about 12 minutes. Top with ham; bake 1 more minute.
  3. Remove pizza from oven and top evenly with basil. Drizzle with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil and sprinkle with pepper flakes. Cut into 6 wedges.
  4. Serving size: 1 wedge
