Lightly sweetened, highly spiced apple slices bake until glossy and perfectly tender. They make a delicious topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or yogurt, or an easy pie filling. You can even improvise a quick individual apple crisp by warming a serving of apples in a ramekin and sprinkling with your favourite granola. We recommend using two kinds of apples for a great balance of flavour and texture: tart Granny Smiths, which become very soft, and sweet Honeycrisp, which remain slightly firmer.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Fresh apple(s)

3 pound(s), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

Packed brown sugar

3 tbsp(s)

Cornstarch

1 tbsp(s)

Ground cinnamon

2 tsp(s)

Kosher salt

½ tsp(s)

Ground nutmeg

¼ tsp(s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 13 x 9–inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apples with the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Spoon the mixture into the prepared dish. Drizzle ¼ cup water over the apple mixture. Cover the dish with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
  3. Uncover the dish and stir the apple mixture. Bake, uncovered, until the apples are tender, about 20 minutes.
