What are GLP-1s?

  • GLP-1 agonists are naturally-occurring hormones that signal fullness to the brain.

  • GLP-1 prescription meds boost these hormones, fighting back against genetic, biological, and environmental factors that prevent weight loss.

  • This causes reduced appetite levels that result in more effective weight loss.

Are they safe?

  • GLP-1s are FDA-approved and clinically proven medications.

  • The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, or other gastrointestinal discomfort.

  • Your Care Team will advise you on the best ways to minimize side effects.

The exact medication that your Clinician will prescribe depends on your medical history, biology, and insurance coverage. When appropriate, your Clinician may prescribe GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (brand name Wegovy), liraglutide (brand name Saxenda), or tirzepatide (brand name Zepbound). When appropriate, your clinician may prescribe other weight-loss drugs with which other members have found success such as Metformin and combination Naltrexone and Bupropion. If your treatment plan isn’t working for you, talk to your Weight Watchers Med+ Care Team about adjustments or alternative plans.

Please note, some GLP-1 medications are experiencing intermittent nationwide shortages. See which medications are affected on the FDA shortage database.

It depends on your treatment plan. For GLP-1 medications, your medications are not included, but your Care Team will work with you to get your medication covered by insurance. If insurance covers your medication, you may still be responsible for a copay.

For non-GLP-1 medications, your medications are included in the cost of membership when you choose our mail-order pharmacy partner, Carepoint.

Carepoint's address is 9 Commerce Dr, Schaumburg, IL 60173.

Results depend on which medication you’re prescribed and your medical history. Typically, patients on a GLP-1 medication will lose 10-20% of their body weight. Learn how GLP-1s for weight loss really work.

Currently, there are no generic options for GLP-1s. If your insurance does not cover a GLP medication, your Care Team will help you identify other affordable options.

The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, or other gastrointestinal discomfort. Your Care Team will advise you on the best ways to minimize side effects. Learn more about the side effects of weight-loss medications.

No. Saxenda (liraglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide), and Zepbound (tirzepatide) are GLP-1 medications that are FDA approved specifically for the treatment of obesity.

GLP-1s are indicated for long-term use, much like other medications to treat chronic conditions. The effects stop immediately if you stop taking the medication, and it is likely in most cases that some weight regain will occur. As you reach your healthy goal weight, you should discuss with your clinician about adjusting your maintenance dose if necessary.
