Ideas for Smart Snacking

This is a smart approach to snacks: Make ’em work for you. If you find yourself getting overly hungry between meals—and racing to eat your food—a nutritious, satisfying snack can help keep you on an even keel.

How snacking can help

Healthy snacks can help keep your hunger levels even throughout the day—plan for them to ensure wise choices: Whether you’re road-tripping on vacation or spending the day at the park, you might be less tempted by spur-of-the-moment picks if you already have a snack in your bag.

Build a better snack

When you want a bite, a lean protein- and fiber-rich carb pairing can help keep you going till your next meal. Here are some of our favorites.

  • ½ cup nonfat plain yogurt (top with fruit or chopped up chocolate chips!)

  • 2 Tbsp hummus

  • 24 pistachios

  • 2 Tbsp pumpkin seeds

  • ⅓ cup shelled edamame (fresh soybeans)

  • Hard-boiled egg

  • Low-fat string cheese

  • ¼ cup oven-roasted chickpeas

Tip from a Wellness Coach

“I love dip! I take ½ cup of plain, fat-free Greek yogurt, add fresh lime juice, lime zest, smoked paprika, and sea salt, then stir to combine. It’s perfect for cut-up veggies or pretzels."
