How to stay healthy on holiday (and relax…!)

You’ve worked hard to get in shape for your holiday, so don’t let a hotel buffet derail your efforts. Stick to some simple rules, and you can enjoy the food and drink without the guilt.

On your journey
Find out if a meal is included on your flight to avoid filling up at the airport. If not, pack a healthy meal to eat, instead.

Drink plenty of water, as flying can be dehydrating. Don’t fill up on alcoholic drinks as these can dehydrate you even further and disrupt your blood-sugar levels.

Avoid high-calorie snacks such as peanuts or biscuits. Chop up fruit or vegetables to nibble on – this can also save you money on expensive train trolley prices.

Beat the buffet trap
Try not to hit the all-inclusive buffet two or three times at every meal. Also, if you stick to healthy choices at breakfast and lunch, you can indulge a little more in the evening.

Avoid puddings such as gateau and stick to sorbets if you do want something sweet. And don’t stay at your table after your meal – move to the lounge or balcony to avoid temptation.

Ask housekeeping not to leave complimentary chocolates or snacks in your room. You can’t eat them if they’re not there!

Don’t drink your calories
Stay away from sugary or creamy cocktails, and stick to ‘clear’ drinks like a mojito or a margarita. Adding lots of ice will also trick your brain into thinking you’re having a large one.

Alternate drinks with a glass of water – this will stop you feeling groggy the following morning, too.

Hit the dance floor! Busting a few moves can burn some serious calories and is seriously good fun.
